One of my former students stated that I taught with a combination of passion and compassion. I have come to think that is a very apt description of my teaching.
When a student approaches the piano, I seem to forget whatever else was on my mind. All of my energy becomes focused on helping make musical concepts understandable to that particular student, with his or her unique and individual strengths and weaknesses. The hand position, sound, interpretation of the music, all become of extreme importance to me. However, I never lose sight of the fact that this is an individual child, and as such, I aim to guide. I have intense empathy for what is happening in the student's mind. I never want to guide in such a way that the child feels anything but encouraged. Having been very sensitive all my life, I am intensely aware that hearing even one harsh word can be devastating!
My goal is always to do everything in my power to develop the student's musical potential. I have at times heard myself say, that I am my very best version of myself, when teaching piano lessons! I believe that this is a true statement.
"Beautiful music... can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us."
